Brighton, where I live, is pretty unique in the UK at least for having a large collection of elm trees. Some of the older ones are truly magnificent trees. There is one such in the centre where a number of routes converge as they flow down to the sea. The council have put a concrete bench in a square around its trunk.

Today, like all hot days, weary pedestrians sat on the bench under its shade. They would check their phones, slowly fan themselves or lick an ice cream. In short, they rested.

I like to think that most of them were oblivious to the what a rare and magnificent beast the elm was. It somehow adds to its splendour.
