Late 70's in a small town surrounded by farmland and an hour to the nearest city. About a thousand White students and one civilized black. The teachers were smart and if you showed any spark they were happy to work with you. We had a (very) small math club where we taught ourselves more advanced algebra and calculus starting in grade 10. Two teachers supplied textbooks and would assist with questions and problems. One thing that made a difference is how students were streamed into lower, middle and advanced levels of courses starting in grade 10. We went to grade 13 back then.
