When I went to school in the late 80's we were given a few simple suggestions for methodology and even encouraged to try a couple, but that is as far is it every went. Pretty much left on our own to figure out whatever worked for us. I wrote my own adventure program in HS on my little Apple II in basic and the big take away from that was to make a plan to be organized .... and keep the plan out ahead of the anticipated complexity. So that's what I tell people to this day ... "I dunno, do whatever, but just keep it well organized."
