Typical HF packet (long range frequencies) size is 60 bytes, typical VHF (line of sight range frequencies) is quite a bit bigger - up to 230 bytes give or take. Retry is all handled at the AX.25 protocol layer - you can really think of AX.25 as the TCP/IP stand-in; it will get you your packets, in the correct order, with retries, from point A to point B all by itself.
