Most Americans don't know how involved their own ancestors were in the slave trade, either. Unless you've done a deep dive into your history, it's not always clear. But whether or not our ancestors were complicit, every white American has benefitted from it - sometimes subtly, sometimes obviously.

The big problems for Americans descended from slaves is the lack of documentation - there's a gap that can't be connected because of that horrible history.
