One early fall day, I rested in the grass after a morning of gardening. High in the clear blue sky I saw sparkles and tendrils of light, like my eyes twitching from fatigue.
But they persisted, and were consistent. Curious, I got out my camera and zoomed in and focused on infinity. Indeed, sparkling transparent filaments were floating through the sky. Spiders "ballooning" – babies climb to trees, spin out a thread of silk, and float away on the wind to a new home.
