This has been a long evolving trend in art going back to when Duchamp displayed the urinal. Novelty took hold over aesthetics. Part of it I think was the realization that art and design are high skill and shock and awe were much easier. No one could argue that pop art can hold a candle to Caravaggio but it’s much less friction to just create “new” and make a narrative for why it’s better than it is to really create quality. The slow ache of high time preference in all things. Nature never sacrificed aesthetics for function. Neither should we.
