For example, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and all the other Linux distributions, all benefit each other, even just by existing. They also collaborate more directly. They compete with Windows and Mac, not with each other.

When someone switches from Windows to any Linux distribution that means one more person who complains when web sites, computers, or peripherals don't work with Linux out of the box. That, in turn, helps all other people who use Linux.
