An attitude common among people in technology, I have observed, is that if something is very clever, it must be a good thing for society. For whatever reason, they don't consider the potential harms. They want the public to admire the thing they've done. They're encouraged by people who want to sell the technology, (and they're not thinking about the harms either, just about the $$$).
Maybe techies are just not a socially aware group of people.
