Fabric used to be precious, and people repaired their clothes and used old garments to make new ones. We live in a totally different world now and fabric, most of it synthetic, costs so little ppl just throw away their clothes and linens. I hate that world, and I don't want to participate. I'm not a great seamstress (how I hate the gay term "sewist") and sewing is a slow, multi-stepped process, but it's satisfying all the same.
I bought myself a present. We've been so broke for so long, and shit just keeps getting more expensive, that I repair all our clothes, underwear, sheets, and towels by hand. I had gotten rid of my old machine when my life got busy but now it's unbusy again. This will speed up the endless patching and repairing and also, if I just HAVE to have a new dress, then I have to make it.
