Afaik they're not killing DMs, they're just replacing them with a built out messaging app that has closer functionality to dedicated messengers, plus end to end encryption.
I only lurk on X really but I think it is a good idea from a business perspective. Competes directly with Meta's Messenger and WhatsApp.
The two companies are very closely competing ever since Zuck copied X's whole strategy after all, which I found hilarious ngl. Literally did a total 180 on free speech and fact checking haha.
