in the US, if you call 911, your phone is connected to the nearest cell tower regardless of who owns it
if none are in range, your phone will allow you to connect to a satellite and text dispatch
this functionality is not fully supported by all the US yet, but the areas it is fully supported at this time are the ones where you would uh, need it, like areas with serious remote wilderness
so if you have a medical emergency in the US and no service, *do not try to find signal*
