As others mentioned, there are technical reasons (e.g. some foods change when exposed to light, German has the word https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lichtgeschmack for that).
But an important factor are social aspects or market expectations. You can have all the right technical properties and pass blind taste tests, but if consumers associate wine in cardboard packaging with being low-quality, or milk in plastic bags with not being fresh, it won't be produced that way.
