- I'm interested in papers in diverse fields, so if someone asked if a paper was "of broad interest to mathematicians in diverse fields" I would tend to think in terms of whether I could be interested in it, turning down the knobs a bit on my niche interests like category theory and quantum field theory.

(Note: "could be interested in it" is weaker than "would actually bother to read it" - there's too much interesting stuff to read most of it.)
