I am no great fan of Chomsky, but this is a totally embarrassing opinion - LLMs only give more fuel to Chomsky’s primary criticism of behaviourism about the poverty of stimulus. Also, why would interest in the deep structure of language be a somehow suspect - our innate ability to recognize the grammaticality of sentences remains something that should give awe.
