Conversely, many of my cherished neighbourhood friends are people we literally met on the street while out walking or biking. You pass the same people on foot every day, you inevitably get to know each other. Pass the same people in cars every day, and you wouldn't even know it.

An SUV slid into the crosswalk ahead of me. I was scowling at their bumper and opening my mouth to tell them off when through the window I heard, "Oh hey, Madeleine!" It was my friends in the SUV. Cars just make it so hard to have nice neighbourly interactions.
