Fireworks (1988), by Angela Carter is a collection of some of her short stories. Several are set in Japan, where the first person narrator is achingly aware of being an outsider while also relishing the experience.
She is the Queen of the Night, conjuring up a world of sly, subversive, erotic associations with her imagery. One story reinvents the Garden of Eden in Java. Another melds the creepiness of puppetry with vampirism in Transylvania.
Heady stuff.
