I think the key question is, how come we abandoned capitalism as it was originally designed? Today, we're closer to mercantilism, where the government has an enormous influence over the market. The result is badly working markets, and wealth accumulating with the person who have the best connections with government.
What we really need, is a dismantling of governments and government interference in the markets, and "get back to basics".
