In the 19th century news was spread in written form. Fake news was REALLY easy to produce and difficult to verify, given the distances and travel times involved.
Photography, video, audio was much harder to fake, making it feel direct and authentic, though I think that does injustice to how much presentation affects how people understand it.
Now those are becoming easy to fake we're entering into an era more similar to the 19th century again.
