I have a lung infection that is, in theory, curable with an 18-month course of antibiotics. Oddly, Mayo Clinic's website talks about life expectancies and median survival time. So I asked my infectious disease doc, "If this is curable, why do so many people die within 5 years of diagnosis?"

"Oh, it's because the meds regimen is complicated so people fall out of compliance. Others hate the side effects and just quit."

This struck me as insane. But 4 months into treatment? I get it now...
