Yeah pretty much. At the time I got seriously into it, there was a subculture of "industrial Haskell" that was developing, with a strong focus towards building "real" software with Haskell. The stuff that came out of that subculture was quite pleasant, but it didn't really stand a chance against the research arm of the userbase.

Then again Haskell feels like it's always been honest about not wanting to be "successful" so much as being a breeding ground for academia, so...
