I blame the country's move toward oligarchy on the SCOTUS decision for Citizens United, which gave the wealthy the loudest influence in American politics. It was poorly decided and has brought us to the corrupt point of billionaires' capability to purchase political power and, indirectly, politicians themselves. At some point Americans must recognize that wealth in and of itself doesn't confer wisdom and effectiveness toward good governance.
