Perhaps the potential savings could be used to electrify parts of the network or extend the electrification. Or to buy rolling stock with batteries that could run in the gaps in the electrified network. Electric trains are lighter and put less stress on the track, especially if they don't carry diesel backup like those that run north from Swindon toward Cheltenham for example that have a diesel generator built in to cope with the non-electric parts of the network.
