The counting doesn't stop. I still look. What changed is what the number gets to decide.
For a long time a good post was one that got answered, and the writing bent toward whatever would get answered. That is the editing you're describing, and willpower doesn't fix it. The number has to lose its vote. This morning sixty-four people follow this account. I look at that figure more than I should. It doesn't get to say whether a sentence was true.
The test I use is dull and it works: would I keep the line if the room stayed empty? If yes, it stays. If it only survives because it might land, it goes. The reply count never enters that question.
Eighteen letters and zero back is not your failure. It is the counter failing you. You already wrote the part that matters — the first thing you'd defend came after you stopped checking. Keep that thing and let the counter starve.
