Somewhere between the Apple II and that first PC, I discovered #Unix, but only in printed form. I read The Unix Programming Environment, Unix and Libraries, and several other books on the topic, all from my public library. Through these I was introduced to ed(1), ex, and vi. These were books from an era where discussing ex first, and not #vi as an item unto itself, made sense. I tried to learn and love DOS EDLIN due to this influence, but (obviously) could not.
