This makes no sense. Legal status in the US is very different from a visa [which is a document that allows entry]. Once you have legal status [student or other work related for stay in the US] you can apply for a visa [which allows entry into the US]. So one can have an expired visa [which will affect ability to travel back in to the US] but doesn't change the validity of the legal (residency) status.
