Last night I finished "The Rise of Endymion" by Dan Simmons... the final book in his "Hyperion Cantos".

Its incredible (even if I didn't like the very last bit). A vision of a possible future for humanity in space the likes of which I've never read anywhere else. Even a future Dalai Lama is a character! Buddhism is a strong element in the book and the ideas it raises are so intriguing that I just picked up "Buddhism: A Journey Through History" by Donald S. Lopez Jr.
