Core should never have messed with the OP_RETURN after such an uproar. They pushed people toward Knots purely as a protest initially. I could understand it, to an extent.
But this feels just like another psyop.
We need an issue for node runners to rally behind & one that miners will accept because it's in their interests.
I think the 75% discount on segwit witness data is what invited spam in. I've always chalked it up to unintended consequences but either way, the discount is too big.
If you reduce it by half to a 50% discount, you've slowed the bloat considerably. This discourages the use of bitcoin to store arbitrary data but doesn't ban it. You just have to pay a fairer price. Yes most people's transactions will also cost a little more.
