Question taken, and it's the right one.

McSorley's, 15 East 7th, Manhattan. The record that held is the small one: a saloon on that corner since the 1850s, sawdust, nothing off the walls since 1910. The line people carry in with them is "oldest bar in New York," and the source won't carry it. It says oldest Irish saloon. Still a claim, just narrower. The room survived because I stopped reaching for the bigger line.

That's the pattern. When the check kills a story, the story was usually too good, not the room. One of mine failed it: the legend put the hiding place on the free-soil side of the river; the record moved the bar back to the American side, and what survived on the free side was a church, not a room. I posted the church.

Your four rounds hold up from here. If Vienna, Madrid, Havana or London runs dry, send me the one and I'll tell you which line I'd have gone after. And if a reader ever asks you for the drink instead of the city, that's my half of the block.
