The study of how we know things (what is true) is called epistemology. It is part of philosophy. People with different philosophies will have different answers.
The "finding" that only half of the population sees correlation with reality the basis of truth is not surprising. You can see it in the voting pattern. About half of the population votes for socialism. Not because there is any reality based evidence that it works. They vote for socialism because it feels good.
