This stems from the thought that “work” was integrated into human behavior as a part of evolution, needed as a mental and physical hack to create discipline which led to a survival advantage - a simple example would be -

Wake up at 6am, which is perhaps needed en masse to survive. Waking up at 6am matches cicadian rhythms to the earth and assists in species survival. The easiest way to force this survival advantage would be to create a structure which “forced” us into waking up at 6am en masse by doing this thing named “work”. How else do you convince people they need to wake up at 6am besides some arbitrary responsibility?

We continuously tie work to species survival because it’s needed for “identity”.

I think this is misguided and perhaps not the core reason for “work” or a lot of other arbitrary tasks we do en masse as humans. I think most of them are related to physical/physiological needs that assist in specie survival based around the ideal adaptation to the earth’s rhythms or the environment, not the human identity.
