when I wrote my previous toot, I completely forgot about "Pele's tears" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele%27s_tears). On that note, all the glass we ever use in applications are amorphous and not quasicrystalline; one wonders how "violent" we need to get to get past boring, amorphous glass and obtain something weird yet exploitable. :)
