This is one of our resident black racer snakes, from the backyard racer family. (A separate population lives at the front of the house.) It has an entrance to its burrow at the edge of a concrete patio, and sometimes it just pops up like a garden eel if it senses activity. Yesterday, the palm warbler birbs (the true butter butts thank you very much) were foraging all around him. Neither birb nor snek were overly interested in each other, but racer had “gettoffamylawn” face.
