As a society, we pride ourselves on rooting for the plucky underdog.

But what we don’t like to admit is that we* prefer it if, once they’ve had their day in the sun, the underdog knows their place and goes back to where they were. If they remain in the ascendancy, we feel threatened and turn public opinion against them - so it’s ok for disabled people to have rights, but not if “it puts me off my dinner”.
