Yes, in most of the Romance languages, /w/ was strengthened to /gw/ early on. In Italian, this /gw/ sound was preserved (guerra, guanto, guisa), but in French, the /w/ element got lost during the first part of the second millennium, leaving only /g/. It is followed by the letter <u> before <i> and <e> to prevent it from being read wrongly.
