Gravity train storage is such a near concept.
I wonder what ever happened to the cryo-storage experiments that were getting done where gases were frozen and then defrosted to release storage energy when needed. That seems like a neat but slightly more complicated way of doing things.
What we ultimately need is a grid storage mix in the same way generation is mixed.
