A conservation success has been confirmed in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
North West Island has officially been declared free of invasive rats after several years of monitoring and eradication work by conservation teams.
The invasive black rats had threatened seabird colonies and sea turtle nests on the island. These animals prey on eggs and young birds, which can devastate fragile island ecosystems.
Through careful monitoring, trapping programs, and long-term ecological management, conservation teams successfully removed the invasive population.
After more than a year without any signs of rats, authorities have now confirmed that the island is officially rat-free.
This is an important milestone for biodiversity in the region. North West Island is one of the most important nesting sites in the Great Barrier Reef for seabirds and sea turtles.
With the invasive predators gone, thousands of animals now have a far better chance of survival.
