in the vein of "it's easier for [some] to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism", SV people can't imagine a world where their luck has run out, where they are despised and shunned and blamed for much of what sucks in the world. in their minds they are making a final massive grab for power that cannot fail. i think that's what the apocalyptic "AGI" talk etc is really about.
