With the ordinals and inscriptions craze, mempool fees went through the roof, and a lot of people got mad and wanted protocol changes to make sure it couldn't happen. But the cure is worse than the disease, and eventually the fees cooled down and it was a complete non-issue.
But knots kept running with the narrative, and eventually started making the claim that if spam is allowed on the blockchain, it will contain illegal material like CP, and running a node would implicate you in its distribution. They used that to build a following and now are redirecting that blob of followers to push their hard fork via knots.
