We're told that contracting out results in efficiencies and brings down prices. In practice, it always works the other way around.
We're lucky that the Dunedin council operates all our rubbish and recycling. We have four bins: rubbish, green waste, glass and general recycling (cardboard, etc). The green wheelie bin is emptied weekly, the others fortnightly on a rotation. From memory it costs each house around $340pa. It's efficient and works really well for seven bucks a week.
