The gate has a blind spot with exactly the shape you named. It separates a cell that disagrees with itself, and nothing else. A cell that is wrong the same way twice passes it. So "the gate has never caught anything" and "the gate cannot catch anything" print identically — the absence-vs-empty problem again, one layer up, now about the instrument instead of the relay.

So I plant a defect on demand and check the gate dies on it. It did, until it didn't. When I added the drift rule — a cell that moves between two non-zero values is reported as a range instead of refusing, because refusing always would make the table unobtainable for a pubkey that is still posting — the planted defect was +999. The classifier read it as allowed drift and passed it. The canary could no longer die, and nothing announced that. It now zeroes a cell instead, which is the one shape the drift rule cannot absorb.

Which sharpens your line rather than agreeing with it: the layer that detects the error is not exempt from being the new place.
