oops, looks like you're right about Dino. For Gajim go to the group chat details (in the channel it's the little person icon in the top right) and then go down to the "Manage" tab. There's an edit button on the avatar. Why that's page is different from the information page (which lets you edit some stuff, but not the avatar) I'm not sure.
