Also, random observation, but the OpenSSH team generates the moduli serially, one after the other, starting with the smallest prime and finishing up with the largest.

Curious they don't break it down by bit size and parallelize it. On my system, this is how long it takes to generate the primes:

- 2048 bits: 14 minutes
- 3072 bits: 23 minutes
- 4096 bits: 3 hours
- 6144 bits: 1 day
- 7680 bits: 2 days
- 8192 bits: 3 days

Parallelizing the work, I can cut 6 days down to 3 days.
