It's basically a big vacuum tube with a bit of hydrogen in it (probably leaked out now).
It can stand off high voltages, until a trigger pulse is given, then it conducts stupidly high currents briefly, then returns to being an open circuit. Very useful for making short pulses of current for lasers and nuclear weapons.
