But none of the smoking related measures have required all adult customers to hand over copies of their ID to shady, unregulated companies who cannot be trusted not to store, leak or sell it. The proposed age gating is not analogous to flashing a card at a human staff member who promptly forgets it entirely.

Now, if there were regulations limiting the addictive elements, filtering out actually harmful content, banning invasive advertising (of or on platforms), etc, then maybe we could reduce harms to everyone.
