when I was 14, I looked at my GCSEs and figured out that if I coasted for two years, I'd probably get a similar set of results to what I could manage if I worked damned hard. So I coasted.

If I could figure out this input/output relationship and adjust my input accordingly at 14, I'm damned sure fully grown adults up and down the country can do the same re "work ethic" and pay.

It doesn't help that for some time, the only route to better salary is moving jobs - promotion just isn't a thing for most people, so there's no point working extra hard to get one.
