Kayakers and snorkelers in Southern California came across a rare, ominous oarfish, known for signaling disasters. Only about 20 of these massive, silvery fish have been seen in over 120 years in California. The 12-foot-long oarfish was found dead near La Jolla Cove, a rare occurrence as they usually inhabit deep waters. Scientists are conducting a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Oarfish are linked to earthquakes, including a sighting before Japan's 2011 earthquake and one shortly before a 4.4 magnitude quake in California.
