Theatrical boxoffice was the foundation of the entertainment industry. A movie you sell tickets for has the highest revenue per hour produced, and it can be measured easily so you know what's working.
Theatrical revenues meant that secondary sales to cable, streaming and broadcast were gravy for hits and loss reduction for bombs. But to cover the expense of production cable and streaming revenues are not enough.
