A small spanish goes a long way in many Latin American country. And I mean really not too much. Even in Brazil, where they speak portugues. Sometimes the middle ground is spanish, as they dont speak english. (But fortunately in many places they do...) So start that duolingo or babel before you go. The more basic stuff you understand, the better off you will get. Of course going on a spanish tour would still be hard, but it will help a lot.
