The Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik (685–705) introduced reforms that replaced the earlier Byzantine-Roman coinage with purely Islamic coins, such as the gold dinar and silver dirham.&#xA;The Roman coinage, including copper-diluted fiat coins, was gradually phased out in favor of gold and silver-based Islamic currency. </html></oembed>
